Journal: What attracted you to hosting KPLU’s  Midday Jazz radio show?

DS: I’ve been a jazz fan since my early teen years.  Having worked for quite a few years in commercial radio doing telephone and talk and also DJ-ing just about every kind of music but jazz, when a spot opened up at KPLU I jumped at it.  I’ve been faking it so well since then, that after 20 years they still haven’t found me out.

Journal: Do you play an instrument?

DS: I used to play bagpipes but stopped by popular demand.  All in all it was for the best.

Journal: How did you get involved in the FH Jazz Labs?

DS: Through my old friends, artists Lewis and Nancy Spaulding of Friday Harbor. Their daughter Laurie is in charge of the justly famous chow at the FHL [event] and through her they know Rachael Anderson at the Labs and somehow it came up that they knew me and Rachael asked them and they asked me and so on and so on…
