Work from artists of all types will be displayed for a one-week show at Alchemy Art Center, at 1255 Wold Road on San Juan Island. Sculpture, paintings, photographs, poetry, music, and performance art focusing on social issues, the power of protest, and reflections on our changing nation and world will be on display or performed. The show will be open daily from 2-7 p.m., May 4 through 11. Special events will run later. The event is free, but donations are appreciated.

Friday, May 5 is movie night starting at 6 p.m. The power of protest is captured on film and projected onto the ceiling of the dome. Bring a pillow to sit on and something to wet your whistle. We will bring the popcorn.

Saturday, May 6 will start with a poetry reading at 4 p.m. with original work read by the authors and classic works read by Helen Machin-Smith and Daniel Mayes of Island Stage Left. Live music and performance art will begin at 6:30 p.m. Get ready for some powerful music, humor, paint and skin. The musical line-up is still in progress. with Gabe Maas then Savio Farrell wrapping up the night.

Sunday, May 7 at 2 p.m., there will be a presentation by Bill Moyer, executive director of the Backbone Campaign, on creating dramatic protest art that gets seen by the media. Masters of theatrical protests, Backbone is responsible for the fantastic visuals of the Kayaktavist protests and the Shell No campaign.

More events are being scheduled as people jump in. Bring your work by May 2 for display or just come to the show and be inspired. If you have work to contribute call Gretchen at 378-5733.
