Pen and ink drawing at Alchemy Art Center

Submitted by Alchemy Art Center

In this exciting hands-on six-week course, Sam Ford will teach the history, tools and techniques of one of our oldest and most versatile mediums for visual expression.

We will begin with an introduction to the variety and significance of pen and ink illustration throughout history — from fine art to editorial, underground and superhero comics. Following will be an overview of the tools and materials used, and how to find the right ones to settle into your own personal style.

The rest of the course will focus on illustration techniques, including linework, texture and gradation, page layout, depth and lighting, visual storytelling, life drawing and the human figure, and using the unique effects of the medium to your advantage. Instruction will be supplemented with in-class and take-home exercises. Pen and ink illustration is a craft with limitless creative possibilities, and all you need to start is pen and paper, so let’s get drawing.

Pen and Ink with Sam Ford is a six-week class on Saturdays from 1–4 p.m., April 27 through June 1.
