New programs for fun and safe boating in the San Juans

Submitted by the American Boating Club of the San Juan Islands.

The San Juans are a unique and world-renowned boating experience. Not only do we have fantastic boating destinations such as our island state parks and marine resorts, but challenging currents, navigation hazards and weather. Now is the time to get prepared for an enjoyable season on the water.

The local non-profit America’s Boating Club of the San Juan Islands (aka Friday Harbor Power Squadron) has developed a series of over 20 hands-on, on-the-water, and online courses to maximize your enjoyment and safety of island boating – all taught by island experts and focused on our local waters.

Upcoming live programs in April and May include:

· on-the-water boat handling

· mastering your electronic charts & navigation systems

· tides and currents.

Available any time is the Mastering the Salish Sea program with recorded programs on cruising the San Juan and Gulf Islands, crossing the border and avoiding local hazards, among others.

Throughout the year there are in-person and online classes on core boating skills including earning the required Washington State Boater Education Card, marine navigation, boat handling and more.
