The first party of the holiday season on San Juan Island was big, colorful, musical, and tasty. And it was free and open to the public.
The San Juan Historical Museum’s heritage farmhouse and resource center were crowded Dec. 2 for the museum’s Old-Fashioned Holiday Celebration. The event has traditionally been the first holiday event in December on the island.
The museum’s heritage buildings were decorated in holiday lights and finery; the 1894 King Farmhouse gave a sense of what a large holiday gathering might have been like in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
As outside temperatures dipped into the 30s, visitors warmed up inside with free chili and hot apple cider. They joined carolers in some holiday songs, and enjoyed live music by Kirk Fuhrmeister & Friends.
The holiday fun continues today with judging in the Christmas Decorating Contest in downtown Friday Harbor, beginning at 5 p.m. Call the Chamber of Commerce, 378-5240.
Roche Harbor is hosting its Hook em’ and Hold ‘em Salmon Derby and Texas Hold ‘em Tournament today through Saturday. Call Debbie Sandwith, 378-5562.
The Tree Lighting Ceremony is Friday, 5 p.m., at Memorial Park, followed by announcement of the decorating contest winners.
