“Plastics in Our Oceans,” a lecture by Capt. Charles Moore, is scheduled Monday, 5:30-7:30 p.m., in the U.W. Friday Harbor Labs’ Commons.

The event is free and open to the public.

Moore will talk about synthetic polymers in the marine environment and how they are a rapidly increasing, long-term threat.

The presentation is sponsored by Doris Estabrooks, Friends of the San Juans, Friday Harbor Labs, and the San Juan Island Anti-Litter Initiative.

Moore is the founder of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, which is dedicated to the protection of the marine environment and its watersheds through education, research and restoration. The foundation is based in Long Beach, Calif.
