Submitted by the San Juan Island Grange.
The San Juan Island Grange’s Third Thursday Series continues July 17, from 5:30–7 p.m. This free event, with light refreshments, takes place at the Grange and is a timely presentation on climate-hardy apple varieties that have deep roots in island history. Botanist Madrona Murphy of Kwiaht will speak about the rediscovery of nearly forgotten heritage apples, seedling varieties and wild hybrids found across the islands. These trees are more than just old — they’re uniquely adapted to our weather and changing conditions. Attendees will learn which varieties are best suited to island growing, how to support preservation efforts and how to participate in the research, even if you don’t grow fruit trees yourself.
