Ann Einboden of the Friday Harbor Power Squadron is the 2012 outstanding boating educator for Washington state.

Ann Einboden of the Friday Harbor Power Squadron is the 2012 outstanding boating educator for Washington state.

As the winner of the Carl C. Mahken memorial trophy, she is now the state nominee for the national power squadron teaching award, the Charles F. Chapman award.

Eiboden has taught hundreds of classes, from basic boating to advanced techniques and problem-solving. In her teaching, she uses her experience in boating and fishing from Seattle to Alaska for the last 24 years.

In the 20 years that Ms. Einboden has been teaching public boating courses for the Friday Harbor Power Squadron, she has taught the basic class to most squadron members, and advanced classes to many. She credits classes she has taken for thousands of hours of safe boating in the Pacific Northwest, and tries to pass on a love of learning safe boating techniques.

She and her husband, Ronald, moved to San Juan Island in 1988, joined the Friday Harbor Power Squadron, and began taking advanced classes before getting their first boat.

Einboden looks forward to another 21 years of safe boating and teaching in the San Juan Islands and beyond.
