First community dinner of the school year Oct. 10

Submitted by the San Juan Island School District

The first community dinner of the 2018-19 school year will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Oct. 10 in the Friday Harbor High School commons.

A new team of Chef.0 student interns is excited to help at their first dinner, and a new team of student bakers is ready to make delicious desserts. Show these students some love and support the amazing Food for Thought Program and Chef.0 Student Internships. The students will prepare a local harvest menu with local and regionally sourced ingredients.

There will be vegetarian options, also. Suggested donations support the programs and are $15 for adults and $7 for kids under 12. The menu will be:

• Oven-roasted herb chicken: fresh and sustainably grown chicken thighs from Draper Valley Farms.

• Roasted garlic pan gravy: a rich and flavorful pan sauce made with drippings and roasted garlic cloves.

• Squash, leek and mushroom stuffing: homestyle stuffing with squash, leeks, onions and mushrooms.

• French green beans: slender ‘hericot vert’ beans with roasted red peppers and sliced almonds.

• Rustic bread rolls: homemade bread rolls brushed with an herbed olive oil.

• Local fall salad: local salad greens, goat cheese, local asian pears, dried cherries, toasted seeds tossed in a roasted shallot vinaigrette

• Autumn dessert: by Ms. Varvaro’s baking class.
