Ferry ‘Sing-Along’ sets sail, Thursday—all aboard

San Juan Island’s very own barbershop singers will harmonize their way from Friday Harbor to Orcas Island, and back, aboard the inter-island ferry, joined by Sound Vibrations, San Juan’s women’s barbershop and jazz group, and whomever else gets bitten by the barbershop bug, and would like to join in.

Sure, it’s early August, but you’re “Welcome as the Flowers in May” at the annual Ferry Sing hosted by Island Chordsmen Plus, Thursday, Aug. 7.

While the group will reach into its repertoire for several standards, like “Danny Boy” and “Georgia on My Mind,” Chordsmen Plus vice-president Dan Drath says a host of ferry riders generally join in and that director Angel Michaels usually ends up leading what would be best described as a community sing-along.

“The most fun is when other riders stand with us and sing,” baritone Dick Saylor says. “That’s the reason we do it, to enjoy ourselves and share the harmony with other people.”

The inter-island ferry leaves Friday Harbor at 5:45 p.m. and returns at 8:25 p.m. The Ferry Sing and ferry rides, for walk-ons, are free. For info, 378-5646.
