J. Michael Edwards, long-time coordinator of the Concours and self-confessed “car nut,” says the event is well worth a visit for anyone into cars, but is also fun for those who aren’t knowledgeable about classic vehicles.

“There is a lot of camaraderie between ‘car nuts’ and the public. They are so happy to discuss their car, people like to share their cars … For most folks, [classic cars] are their heritage. Many people see them as art forms.”

The registration cost for the first automobile is $30 with additional automobiles at $10 each. Those who register can participate in an “Island Tour” on Aug. 28, ending with a casual wine and appetizer function at the Hannah Heights home of Bob and Lissa McDowell.

This is a major fund-raising event, and the net proceeds from the Concours will be distributed by the Rotary Club, with the majority of the funds going to Hospice of San Juan. Rotary International’s Polio Eradication Project will also receive $1,000 from the net proceeds.

Last year’s Concours attracted 81 entries and about 800 spectators. The organizers are hoping that this year’s number will break that record.

This year’s sponsors are Barrier Porsche and Liberty Printing & Design Center.

The general public is encouraged to come and view the entries, with admission by donation from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The suggested donation is $10 per adult. A boxed lunch will be available for purchase from the Medical Guild, and numerous wine offerings from San Juan Vineyards will also be available.
