Submitted by the Campaign to elect Adrian Kilpatrick

Hi there, for those of you who don’t know me already, my name is Adrian Kilpatrick and I am running for a seat on the San Juan County Council (district 1) in the upcoming election. I was inspired to run for county council after living on San Juan Island throughout the last 39 years of my life. Growing up here, the island’s natural environments and its vibrant community have delivered constant inspiration and has provided a solid base of support throughout the course of my life. Over the past few years, I’ve been getting more and more invested in local politics through my work with the San Juan Climate and Sustainability Advisory Committee, as well as my work as a member of the Friday Harbor Arts Commission. After extensive conversations within these committees and with the locality of the San Juans, It seems apparent that we are currently going through a housing crisis that is having major impacts on our working-class/prospective low-income homebuyers, on top of that our community remains vulnerable to climate-related events caused by wildfire, drought, loss of arable soils/farmlands, extreme hot/cold weather, etc. I have many ideas on how to address these issues, along with other campaign policies, which I will share in detail over at my campaign site https://m.facebook.com/groups/780592874173789/?__n=K.

It is not my aim to run a politically divisive campaign, I am pro-islander, and know that the only way we are going to get things achieved is together. as a community we can create change that will positively impact ourselves and future generations. Beyond the politics, who we are at the core is Islanders. As one of those islanders, what I care most about is the health of you, and this place that we call home.

One of my hopes for this campaign is that it will provide inspiration to a generation of younger islanders who may want to get more involved in local politics. The future of our communities is heavily reliant on what actions we start taking now. I hope to provide leadership by creating a bridge that interconnects the needs and concerns of every generation of islanders, in the hopes that going forward, together we can create a list of goals and outlooks that have a shared interest.

I’m looking forward to getting to know more of you during this campaign. As it unfolds I want to get thoughts and ideas on what the future of the San Juan Islands looks like to you. Your input is useful in forming a unified vision on how to keep these islands thriving. Where we live is a truly incredible place, I will work tirelessly for the people of the San Juan islands to help achieve our common goals and tackle issues that affect all of our communities as a whole.
