While many of us see the daily activity at our schools, much of the foundational work happens behind the scenes. This January, in honor of School Board Recognition Month, I want to publicly thank the five individuals who volunteer their time to guide the San Juan Island School District.
In the San Juan Island School District, our Board of Directors manages a profound responsibility. Entrusted with a $17.5 million budget, 5 schools, and most importantly, the education of over 800 students, their role is as complex as it is essential. From navigating difficult decisions to setting a long-term vision for our schools, their work ensures that our district remains a point of pride for the island.
We are fortunate to have Melanie Hess, Barbara Bevens, T.J. Heller, Brian Moore, and John Kurtz at the helm. These individuals are not just officials; they are dedicated volunteers and fellow citizens who believe in the power of public education. Their advocacy is the bridge between our community’s hopes and our students’ success.
Please join me in thanking them for their service. To learn more about their work, I encourage you to visit https://www.sjisd.wednet.edu/about/our-school-board.
Sincerely,
Fred Woods,
Superintendent of the San Juan Island School District
