Islanders had the opportunity to hear Superior Court candidates Randy Gaylord and John Linde talk about the issues Wednesday in the first in a series of candidate forums planned on the islands. The next forum is scheduled Saturday, 2:30-4:30 p.m., in Mullis Community Senior Center, 589 Nash St., Friday Harbor. Candidates running for the following positions have been invited: U.S. House of Representatives, 2nd District; state Senate, 40th District; County Council, San Juan South; County Council, Orcas West; and San Juan County Superior Court judge.
Randy Gaylord and John Linde each failed to disclose an action taken against them — Gaylord, a sanction; Linde, an admonishment — when they were interviewed for the Superior Court judge appointment last year. “Should those have been listed and answered in the questionnaire? We think they should have been,” said Pearse Edwards, Gov. Christine Gregoire’s communications director.

Betty Chevalier Nash, with blue visor, was the oldest Mitchell Bay Indian at the Canoe Journey gathering at Roche Harbor, July 24. Mrs. Nash, whose mother was Swinomish, is a descendant on her father’s side of the Mitchell Bay people, whose place of origin on San Juan Island was near that of the Lummi.
Businesses have until 4:30 p.m. Thursday to pay their 2009 business license in the Town of Friday Harbor without incurring a 50 percent penalty. Licenses were originally due by June 30.
Carl Stoddard has survived melanoma, bladder cancer, prostate cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Remarkably, his name has been changed to “Comeback Kid.”

Some of the oldest technology on the sea is being paired with some of the newest technology to provide a more complete picture of the health of the region’s waters. Thirteen Coast Salish canoes arrived at Roche Harbor today as part of the 2008 Canoe Journey: the ultimate destination is the territory of the Cowichan First Nation near Duncan, B.C. A free community welcome dinner is scheduled tonight at 7; the canoes depart Saturday morning.
Carl Angelo Perovich of Friday Harbor, Wash., died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 26, 2008 in Friday Harbor. He was 65….
It was a gathering Jimmie Jones would have liked. The sun shone brightly in a clear sky at this spot overlooking San Juan Valley, a spot he once told his family was the most beautiful place on the island. People shared funny stories. This was Jones’ funeral, but there was more laughter than tears. Then, as the small group of mourners dispersed, a plane flew overhead, as if in salute to this World War II airman who loved the skies.
Inter Island Medical Center hosts an open house farewell to Dr. Greg Moran on July 28, 5-7 p.m., in the medical center lobby. The event is open to the public.
