Skeletal remains found Wednesday on a remote part of Jones Island are those of a Des Moines boater reported missing July 3, 2007. Based on dental records, the Snohomish County medical examiner identified the remains as those of William Larry Hickman, 60. A more detailed investigation is expected today or Saturday to try to determine exact cause of death.
A local boy is coming home. Fred Sundstrom, oldest of the five Sundstrom brothers, has been living in an assisted living facility in Bellingham for a couple of years but returns to San Juan Island on Saturday to take up residence in October House.
National Park historian Mike Vouri is the author of a new book, “The Pig War,” published by Arcadia Publishing Co. as part of its Images of America series. The book employs 190 photos — many of them never before published — to tell the story of the events and people of the joint military occupation of San Juan Island (1859-1872). It’s Vouri’s third book on the subject.
More updates and improvements are planned for SanJuanJournal.com. The Web site, which debuted Oct. 2, 1998, is the oldest online news site on the islands. A redesign was launched April 30 that gave the site an updated look as well as enhanced services.

Gus, the golden retriever that received 28 write-in votes for San Juan County Commission in 2004, is setting his sights higher this election season. Gus, who is owned by David Rand of The Sign Company, announced in an e-mail today that he is running for president of the United States.
Dolores (Dee) May (Vickers) (Nash) Estell passed away Aug. 16, 2008 in Mount Vernon, Wash., from complications of a stroke. She was born May 31, 1930 in Helena, Mont. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle. She married Carleton Edward Nash in 1950.
