The Friday Harbor Elementary School PTA and Friends of the Library present a new children’s book entitled, “Ecology from A to Z,” written and illustrated by islander Jacob Angel. Celebrate “I Love to Read Month” with Angel at the San Juan Island Library as he reads and signs copies of this book — his first — on Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
The San Juan Island School District is proud to announce that Beth Spaulding has met the rigorous National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She is the first to earn such certification in the district.
We have much to be thankful for, especially in this community. The Community Thanksgiving Dinner is a way of expressing that gratitude with more than 100 volunteers working together in a manner that any fine dining restaurant would be proud of. These energetic volunteers prepared and served a traditional Thanksgiving dinner to more than 300 diners on Thanksgiving Day.
We can all be proud of the support Friday Harbor and San Juan Island gives to the local Soroptimist club. Recently, 10 Friday Harbor Soroptimists attended a weekend Soroptimist International District Conference in Olympia to learn more about their organization, noteworthy causes and solutions. During the conference, awards were issued and Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor came in second place out of 44 Pacific Northwest clubs in “Recognition of Outstanding Service Work”!
Congratulations to Julie Capron and Michelle Waldron of Friday Harbor. I just read the article about Capron of Softwear and Waldron of Daisy Bloom assisting in the capture of two teen-age shoplifters from Bellingham and all I can say is it made my day seeing our locals working with San Juan County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Customs, and WSF to catch these two common thieves.
Jean McLeod, who during her 20 years in Friday Harbor enjoyed sailing, gardening and doll making, has died. She passed away suddenly Nov. 17 in Atlanta, Ga. due to lung failure. She and her husband, John, were building a home in Hayesville, N.C., where they moved to be closer to family.
Maybe the person who took the little statue from its crib was motivated more by a spirit in need than by a mean spirit. Maybe, just maybe — Lori Narum of Second Act wants to believe — the person who took the little statue from its crib really needed Jesus.
When Julie Capron of Softwear and Michelle Waldron of Daisy Bloom suspected two teen-age girls of stealing clothing from their stores, they decided to do something about it. Right then and there. They looked for the girls. And they found them on the ferry — wearing $800 worth of clothing belonging to four stores.
Monday at noon, the Friday Harbor Town Council will have a special meeting in Town Hall. The topic: A public hearing on the 2009 budget.
Today is officially the first day of the holiday shopping season, a day when turkey dinner-induced drowsiness is replaced by the rush that comes from crowds, decorations, goodies and finding good shopping deals.
Temperatures near 40 and threat of rain Thursday didn’t deter more than 150 islanders and visitors from participating in the fourth annual “Turkey Trot,” a 5K (3.1 mile) run and walk which started at the Best Western Friday Harbor Suites.

Happy Thanksgiving Day, San Juan Island. The holiday season begins today with some potentially positive signs: Ferries from Anacortes to Friday Harbor have been packed for two days and some businesses are hopeful that the first day of holiday shopping season — Friday — could bolster the local economy and reverse two months of lagging sales.
