    The San Juan County Public Works Department and Town of Friday Harbor are sponsoring a free Christmas Tree collection program this year. Trees will be chipped for mulch and not sent to a landfill. Help reduce the volume of holiday trash by bringing your clean, undecorated natural trees (no flocked or artificial trees) to your island’s solid waste facility between Dec. 26 and Jan. 11 during regular open hours.

    Beth Hudson, 62, of San Juan Island is recovering at Harborview Medical Center from injuries she received in a four-car collision on Portland Fair Road late Sunday. Hudson was in surgery Monday. Her right leg was amputated below the knee. Her left leg is “stabilized” and she is scheduled to have surgery on it Thursday, Sheriff Bill Cumming said. She has several broken ribs, a lacerated liver, a bruised pancreas, and broken bones in her right shoulder.

    San Juan County Public Works Operations Manager Russ Harvey said shortly after 2 p.m. today that the roads are getting more treacherous as the temperature is warming. “People shouldn’t think that it is a good time to get out on the road and run errands just because the sun has come out,” he said in a press release issued by the county communications office.

    A Friday Harbor woman was in surgery this morning at Harborview Medical Center for injuries she received in a four-car collision on Portland Fair Road late Sunday. The Sheriff’s Department only identified the woman as a 62-year-old San Juan Island resident.

    Snow kept many islanders hunkered down in warm homes over the weekend, as a storm blanketed the region. The storm caused Alaska Airlines and Horizon Airlines to cancel all flights Sunday afternoon. The state Transportation Department closed I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass and SR 14 through the Columbia River Gorge due to high winds, snow drifts and zero visibility.
