This hasn’t happened here yet. But in this new technological age, it could. And it shouldn’t. That’s the reason for the following editorial.
Richard Carl (Rich) Trainer passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington. He was 65 and had fought a courageous 28-month battle with cancer.

Contract negotiations have been “finalized” between PeaceHealth, San Juan County Public Hospital District No. 1 and the independent San Juan Community Hospital Committee. The hospital district commission is expected to discuss the contract’s status at its meeting Wednesday, 5:30 p.m., in the Frank Wilson EMS Building. The meeting is open to the public.
Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed’s office is making available U.S. flags that are being flown over the state Capitol today in commemoration of Barack Obama’s inauguration.
Have any vintage clothing? Take out those duds and dust them off: Friday Harbor is pulling out all the stops for its 100th birthday Feb. 9. The town’s centennial will be celebrated at three venues that day, with free exhibits, a time capsule, birthday cakes, daylong refreshments, live music and dancing, a speech by Mayor David Jones, and the judging of the beard-growing contest, capped by a community dinner at the San Juan Island Yacht Club.

Family and friends will gather Saturday, 3 p.m., at the Iverson home to remember Marta Kristin Anderson Iverson. Marta Iverson was born March 19, 1959. She died Jan. 13, in the presence of family and friends, of ovarian cancer.
Islanders have two opportunities Jan. 20 to meet Dr. Gladys Mwiti and learn about the work of Oasis Africa, an indigenous African counseling and training center. Mwiti will speak at the San Juan Lions Club meeting, noon, in the American Legion hall downstairs; and at 7 p.m. at Paideia School. The presentations are open to the public.
Do you have an electric wheelchair that is not being used? You can put it to good use and make a difference in someone else’s life. Toni Shiurba of Friday Harbor is recovering from injuries incurred in a car accident. She wants to pay for use of an electric wheelchair, but can’t pay the $250 per month she said she’s been quoted.
Recent new members of Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor are Carol Christensen, Bonnie Hendrickson and Deanna Rogers. They will join more than 80 other members of this local business women’s service club that has been helping our community for 12 years.
President-elect Obama is NOT African-American. He is bi-racial. This error is made consistently in the press. Hopefully somebody will start describing his ethnicity correctly (or better yet, not at all).
Sen. Kevin Ranker, D-San Juan Island, was sworn on Monday when the Senate convened for its 105-day regular session. “There is a lot to do, and I am more than ready to get started on solutions to the major challenges we are facing, both locally and statewide,” Ranker said in a press release.
