Recent new members of Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor are Carol Christensen, Bonnie Hendrickson and Deanna Rogers. They will join more than 80 other members of this local business women’s service club that has been helping our community for 12 years.

The group meets every Wednesday at noon in Vinny’s Restaurant. Soroptimist, meaning “Best for Women” in Latin, defines the purpose of the club. It is involved in several service projects each year on San Juan Island, such as cancer relief through ferry and airfare tickets for anyone with cancer and their caregiver if necessary.

It provides scholarships to teens, to senior graduates, single mothers seeking further education, and funds for women and children with emergency needs. Donations yearly go to the Family Resource Center and the Domentic Violence Service, as well as to sponsorships of The Knowledge Bowl, school sports, beach cleanup, and various Island Rec projects.

The next major fund-raiser will be Saturday, March 14, 2009, at the Yacht Club, for the annual Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner and Auctions. For more information, see www.sifri.org.
