Friday Harbor Baseball & Softball Association is starting its season a little later this year to take advantage of better weather and to allow for online registration and preseason clinics. Here’s the initial calendar.
The federal Small Business Administration will open a Disaster Loan Outreach Center in the San Juan County Courthouse this month to accept applications for business losses caused by the winter storms. SBA officials will be in the courthouse, second floor, on Feb. 5-6, and Feb. 11-13, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The 16th annual Knowledge Bowl is Feb. 5, 7 p.m. in the San Juan Community Theatre. The event is presented by the San Juan Public Schools Foundation. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.
Junior wrestler Justin James shook off an opening-round loss and muscled his way to a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Nooksack Valley Invitational. Not to be outdone, Friday Harbor senior Calen Mehrer dismantled a pair of opponents in succession in the 215 weight division to earn a fourth-place finish as well.
The state Legislature has introduced two bills — one sponsored by our state senator, Kevin Ranker; the other co-sponsored by our state representatives, Jeff Morris and Dave Quall — which would require the cargo, cruise and oil industries to pay for a year-round response tug at Neah Bay to prevent oil spills. The Legislature should make the requirement law.
Feb. 9 is Friday Harbor’s 100th birthday, and it’s our birthday too — all of us who call this place home — for we are all a part of the community and the culture and the history of this place.
Stan Reitan and Bridgett Paterson are engaged to be married April 25, 2009, at San Juan Vineyards. The wedding has been tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m.
Friday Harbor is pulling out all the stops for its 100th birthday Feb. 9. The town’s centennial will be celebrated at three venues that day, with free exhibits, a time capsule, birthday cakes, daylong refreshments, live music and dancing, a speech by Mayor David Jones, and the judging of the beard-growing contest, capped by a community dinner at the San Juan Island Yacht Club.
The federal Child and Adult Care Food Program reimburses child care and adult care centers for some costs associated with providing meals.

Bob Schwartzberg presents a workshop, “Fund-raising for Small Non-Profits,” on Feb. 23, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Skagit Valley College San Juan Center.
Westcott Bay Orchards was a big winner at the Great Lakes International Cider & Perry Competition. The competition was in December but results were released Monday.
The ordinance change, requested by local businesses, would allow illumination of signs and display cases after business hours.
The Friday Harbor Town Council will consider renewing its utility assistance program Thursday, 12:20 p.m., during its noon meeting at Town Hall.
