From front, Maya Bauer, Megan Wilson and Will Christison learn how to strengthen their bodies with balancing poses, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques with Shantaya Yoga instructor Cynthia Burke, at Friday Harbor Elementary School. The yoga class is one of several enrichment classes offered this spring for elementary school students. These photos were taken on March 17.

BC Ferries has agreed to reduce landing fees for the Anacortes-San Juan Islands-Sidney ferry by $100,000 a year for the next three years, a savings of around 25 percent, state lawmakers announced today.
The sun shone in a clear sky, Canadians waved U.S. flags and a bagpiper piped a welcome as about 225 mainlanders and islanders walked off the ferry and onto Canadian soil in Sidney, B.C. The first Anacortes-San Juan Islands-Sidney ferry run of the season was celebrated on both sides of the international border Sunday. But those riding this ferry knew that the event was as much a campaign as a party, particularly with talk in Olympia of possibly ending the route in the future.
The men are taking over the kitchen (well, sort of) for the Community Arts Theatre Society’s annual gourmet bake sale this year. Elegant Edibles is April 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the San Juan Community Theatre. The event gets an added ingredient this year: The Baker Boys.
When non-Native settlers began flooding into the Pacific Northwest in the 1850s, the prairies were the first to undergo considerable change because of their easy conversion to farming use. The result? Today, Western Washington’s prairies — including that at American Camp — are widely considered the most imperiled ecosystems in the region.
Clouds roiled in the skies above San Juan Golf & Country Club. But Jordyn Taylor shook off the chill of this Marchuary day to sink a long putt on the No. 3 and maintain his par streak. His response? “It’s been a bit of a bumpy start, but we’ll get this train rolling.” And roll he did — to a 1-under 34 to help lead the Friday Harbor Wolverines to a 215-265 win over La Conner, March 24.
In response to the story about poor Dini, I am incensed (“Dini’s dilemma,” page 1A, March 11 Journal. This is now the second time that I am writing a letter reminding people to properly secure their animals, whether it be in your vehicle, at your home/neighborhood, or on a walk. It is inexcusable for your animal to be loose or off-leash.
Concepia, Friday Harbor’s latest business venture, opens Saturday with the first solo show of Randy Laybourne, 2-5 p.m., in Churchill Corner, just above the ferry landing.
The American Cancer Society has been an active member of Friday Harbor for many years, offering services and support to those battling cancer as well as life-saving cancer information to the community. We continue our mission of eliminating cancer thanks to the help of generous volunteers and dedicated staff.
A recent article in The Journal regarding slug-bait poisoning of pets (“Don’t let snail bait be your pet’s last meal,” page 6A, March 4), and the sighting of a tell-tale green puddle in the Post Office parking lot combined to remind me that I have long intended to write a warning of the dangers of improperly disposed of anti-freeze fluid.
My life was saved by the paramedics and EMTs here on San Juan Island this past February. While I have already thanked them in private, I would like to thank them publicly now.
