Economic recovery funding is available for Class A water systems (15 or more homes), and smaller systems combining to become Class A, through the Department of Health Drinking Water State Revolving Funds program. Priority will be given to improvements that address new sources, or treatment that addresses bacteriological, protozoan or chemical contaminants that affect public health. Applications need to be made this summer.

Charles A. Hudson, “Charlie,” was born in Oklahoma on Sept. 15, 1967. Most of his adventures were in the Seattle area. Charlie moved to Lopez Island, Wash., in May 2002 and fell in love with the island and the people. He said this was the most beautiful place he had ever been.
Here’s a well-deserved shout-out for Paul Spencer, firefighter/mechanic for the Friday Harbor Fire Department. Spencer took a break from scrambling eggs at the department’s July 5 pancake breakfast to help a Lummi Nation artist whose car wouldn’t start.
I spent a career in Alaska, watching clear-cuts take place. And sitting in lectures in which “biologists” told us that clear-cuts were GOOD for deer. Yeah. With slash 8 feet deep, hillsides eroding into the streams in the rain, and drying up when it was sunny. Unhappily, similar things are happening around here. Not as bad as clear-cuts, or maybe they are as bad, everything considered.
San Juan County Administrator Pete Rose announced today that Ron Henrickson, director of Community Development and Planning, has “left the county’s staff” in a departmental reorganization. The reorganization will move elements of CDPD into the County Administration and the Health and Community Services departments.

PeaceHealth officials announced July 8 they have signed a purchase agreement on a 22-acre site near Friday Harbor Airport where they plan to build a new integrated medical center and critical access hospital, scheduled to open in summer 2012.
The Friday Harbor Fire Department celebrated its 100th birthday over the Fourth of July weekend. As part of its celebration, antique fire trucks from Washington state and Canada participated in the Friday Harbor Fourth of July Parade. In addition, Mayor David Jones proclaimed July 5 as “A Day of Recognition & Appreciation for Our Fallen Heroes and Surviving Veterans.”

This year’s Fourth of July celebration will long be remembered for its crowds, its commemorations of the town and fire department centennials, and the presence of Lummi Indian Nation representatives as grand marshals of Friday Harbor’s parade. But it will also be remembered for its winners.
Arguably, this will be an island Fourth of July celebration unlike any other. Representatives of the Lummi Indian Nation — the First People of San Juan Island — are special guests at the town’s Fourth of July celebration, including participation in the Fourth of July Parade. The town fire department celebrates its 100 years of service to the community with several events. And regular annual events also take place: the parade, Rock the Dock, activities in Roche Harbor, as well as fireworks shows in Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor.
Rhiana Franklin, 14, of Friday Harbor will sing on the KWJZ 98.6 FM Stage at the Tacoma Freedom Fair on the Fourth of July.
Rhiana, daughter of Ken and Suzanne Franklin of Friday Harbor, performed from 12:45-1:30 p.m. and 3:30-4 p.m. She will be accompanied by Bob Leytze on accoustic guitar and Cecil DeMeerleer on bass.
