Town proclamation honors firefighters, other emergency personnel

The Friday Harbor Fire Department celebrated its 100th birthday over the Fourth of July weekend. As part of its celebration, antique fire trucks from Washington state and Canada participated in the Friday Harbor Fourth of July Parade. In addition, Mayor David Jones proclaimed July 5 as "A Day of Recognition & Appreciation for Our Fallen Heroes and Surviving Veterans."

Here’s the proclamation issued by the mayor:

PROCLAMATION
in
Recognition and Appreciation of
Our Fallen Firefighters, Police Officers,
Emergency Medical Services Personnel and Military

Whereas, The Congress & President of the United States have designated certain dates of every year that honor and recognize those who have made sacrifices in order to safe guard our citizens and our beliefs and way of life; and

Whereas, Too many firefighter, police, emergency medical service, and military volunteers and personnel have fallen while protecting the public in the events of Nine Eleven, Hurricane Katrina and several other known catastrophes; and

Whereas, The Town of Friday Harbor recognizes and appreciates these noble individuals and acknowledges that others like them will continue to unselfishly make sacrifices in order to safeguard that which we hold dear; and

Whereas, The volunteers and personnel of the Town of Friday Harbor and the other communities with us today have truly, faithfully & diligently performed their duties and rendered invaluable services to our citizens and communities;

Now, Therefore, I, David F. Jones, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of Friday Harbor do hereby proclaim July 5, 2009 as

A Day of Recognition & Appreciation for Our Fallen Heroes and Surviving Veterans

and call upon all citizens to remember fallen firefighters, police officers, emergency medical services, and military personnel and volunteers who have made the ultimate sacrifices in their service to protect that which we hold dear;

Furthermore, I urge all to pay respect to our veterans and those who will unselfishly continue on in their stead.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Town of Friday Harbor to be affixed this 5th day of July, 2009.
