Felix Menjivar’s leadership and people skills have been tested in some places that can be pretty contentious: As a sheriff’s deputy, as a union president, and as a neighborhood association president. “Working as a deputy has given me a very deep understanding of the people here,” he said. “I feel a responsibility to bring that experience to the Town Council and try to listen to people, bring balance to what’s going on. I want the opportunity to help shape the future of this town.”

We must not forget: We have a justice system. Each of us has a constitutionally protected right to a fair trial. Each of us, when accused of a crime, is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty. Facts will be presented, testimony will be given, and all evidence will be weighed at a public trial.
For starters, I wish my collegue, Kevin Ranker of Anacortes, the best of health and recovery from what ails him. I am very grateful to have met him last year during the 40th District Senate race in the 2008 election of San Juan, Skagit and Whatcom counties. His secretary says that he has some health issues, so I would encourage everyone in our area to contact him at his office in Anacortes and wish him the very best. It’s good karma.

Like a swimmer with Michael Phelps-like strength, a 35- to 40-foot pontoon houseboat that partially sank off Jensen’s Shipyard has made its way to Eagle Cove off the west side of San Juan Island. The houseboat, which was photographed off Jensen’s taking on water Aug. 2 and partially submerged Sept. 2, was sighted off Eagle Cove today. The houseboat is believed to have been buoyed by the currents around Turn Island, through Cattle Pass and to its current spot near Eagle Point.
