The Friday Harbor Wolverines girls soccer team defeated Meridian 2-0 Saturday at Meridian – the first defeat of the perennial powerhouse in four seasons. The Wolverines improved to 6-2 overall. Emma Ytander again led the team, scoring an unassisted goal in the third minute. Mandy Turnbull completed the scoring in the 38th minute, off an assist from Rhianna Franklin who was playing in an unaccustomed role as a striker.
I’m optimistic that a strong stewardship ethic remains in this community, although currently quieted by the budgetary unrest and a debate characterized by a stark lack of civility that goes unquestioned. I’m also ready to step up with others in my community to do what I can locally to ensure that future generations experience restored salmon, rockfish, seabird and marine mammal populations in the waters of the San Juans.
Last week’s decision by the County Council to remove shoreline critical areas from updates to county code for another three years is another example of the lethargy in our county offices to update environmental protections for our community.

Logic and Accuracy Tests for vote-counting equipment which will be used to tally mail-in ballots for the Nov. 3 General Election are scheduled for Oct. 6. The first of three public meetings is scheduled today on the National Marine Fisheries Service’s proposal to put more distance between vessels and the Southern Resident killer whales.
