U.S. Customs and Border Protection has stationed a mobile Radiation Portal Monitor in Friday Harbor, a port of entry into the United States. The truck-mounted RPM is a completely self-contained, passive monitoring device that screens for dangerous radiological devices or materials that might be smuggled into the U.S. in vehicles arriving aboard the international ferry.

On Saturday, a simulated earthquake and tsunami will rock Northwest Washington state and Southwest British Columbia. The simulated natural events will test ham radio operators in their annual Simulated Emergency Test. This is an annual emergency communications exercise sponsored by the American Radio Relay League.
The Journal of the San Juan Islands won seven awards in the 2009 Better Newspapers Contest hosted by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association. The awards included first place for the newspaper’s Friday Harbor Centennial special section published in February.
