The San Juan Islands have been designated a national wildlife refuge and a scenic byway. Next, they could become a national monument. Fox News reported today that the Obama administration is considering 14 sites, including the San Juan Islands, for national monument designation. The report was based on Department of Interior documents leaked to a Utah congressman and obtained exclusively by Fox News. The mostly public lands include Arizona deserts, California mountains, Montana prairies, New Mexico forests, Washington islands and the Great Basins of Nevada and Colorado — totaling more than 13 million acres.

Desi Whalen won fourth place and $500 at the Washington State American Legion Oratorical Contest. Desi, the daughter of Carol Whalen and Ron Whalen, both of Friday Harbor, is a junior at Friday Harbor High School.

Frances Josephine (Mickey) Cahail passed away Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, in the Islands Convalescent Center at the age of 100. She was born October 21, 1909, south of Friday Harbor near Madden’s Corner to Julius Oscar Bergman and Mary Ellen (Madden) Bergman. She was the third of five children.

Three Friday Harbor wrestlers placed second at the 1A Regional Tournament Feb. 13 and qualified for the Mat Classic in the Tacoma Dome, this weekend. Sophomore Michael Davis (145), senior Calen Mehrer (215) and sophomore Willy Dunn (285) will compete in the 1A State Wrestling Tournament, also known as the Mat Classic, which begins Friday. Junior Shawn Cutting (160) placed fourth in his division to qualify as an alternate.

Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor are celebrating Friday Harbor’s Centennial with more than 100 members. San Juan Island’s club was founded in 1996 by a group of women who shared the vision of a service organization focusing on the needs of women and children. Forty-four islanders signed the charter, of which 13 are still active members of the club: Lenore Bayuk, Carrie Brooks, Judy Cornell, Lynn Danaher, Phyllis Davis, Debbie Dickinson, Pat Hansen, Nancy Hanson, Carol Jackson, Mitzi Johnson, Judie Ross, Annette Schaffer and Vicky Thalacker.
Training and teaching the next generation of Washington’s farmers could get easier thanks to legislation passed Tuesday by the Senate. Senate Bill 6349, sponsored by Sen. Kevin Ranker, D-San Juan Island, would allow internships for aspiring farmers – providing firsthand experience in their future line of work.

Rosary will be recited Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. and Mass will be celebrated Feb. 20, 11:30 a.m., in St. Francis Church in Friday Harbor for Frances “Mickey” Cahail. Mrs. Cahail died at 11:50 p.m. Feb. 12 in Islands Convalescent Center. She was 100.
Harriet Woodward Bauer died on Saturday, Feb. 6, in a Hospice House in Kirkland. Harriet and her ex-husband Wolf Bauer spent years on their property on San Juan Island, beginning in 1936 when Wolf was the chief engineer at Roche Harbor. They formed and entertained a kayak club who often met on the “Bauery.” This group still meets after 60 years.
