It comes down to this day. After 13 wrestling events since Dec. 5, three Friday Harbor wrestlers — Michael Davis, Willy Dunn and Calen Mehrer — qualified for this day: The 1A State Wrestling Championship — the storied Mat Classic — in the Tacoma Dome.

Between Dec. 5 and Feb. 13, Friday Harbor’s wrestlers endured double duals and triple duals. The Iron Sharpens Iron Tournament, the Mount Baker Invite, the Sky Valley Classic. The workouts and the late-night ferry rides. Each event a team sport yet a very personal sport. Out there on the mat, it’s just you and your opponent. You’ve got to be faster, smarter, stronger.

And in the end, three Friday Harbor wrestlers — Michael Davis, Willy Dunn and Calen Mehrer — earned passage to the most storied event in prep wrestling in Washington: The 1A State Wrestling Championship. The Mat Classic, in the Tacoma Dome. Thousands of spectators and the best prep wrestlers in the state.

At 11:52 a.m. today, Davis wrestles Lee Leavell of Tonasket in the first round of the 145 weight class competition.

At 1:12 p.m., Mehrer wrestles Brandon Hudson of Tonasket in the first round of the 215 weight class competition.

At 1:28 p.m., Dunn wrestles John Delap of Okanogan in the first round of the 285 weight class competition.
