San Juan won three games and narrowly lost its fourth to finish second in a pre-season jamboree March 13-14 at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham. The Dragons’ eight freshmen got a workout and contributed to a 6-1 win over Skagit Valley and an 8-1 win over Roosevelt on March 13. The Dragons defeated Skagit Valley again, 9-1, on March 14 to face Division I Overlake in the final.
San Juan Healthcare will host a Community Health Fair on March 27, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Mullis Community Senior Center. The event is free and open to the public. The event theme is “A Healthy Jump Into Spring,” and all ages are being encouraged to come and enjoy demonstrations, free health screenings, giveaways, healthy treats, and speakers.
As a member of the WTIA and part of Washington’s high-tech community, I am writing to express my opposition to the new custom software tax included in the House version of Senate Bill 6143. There are more than 2,500 custom software businesses in our state and most of these are small companies, and many are independent and freelance consultants. These companies and their employees already pay more than $150 million in state and local taxes and are held up as the kind of innovation businesses we want to encourage in Washington.
United Way of San Juan County announces that more than $152,600 was raised during its 2009 campaign. The money will help support 31 local programs providing essential services for individuals and families.
A spaghetti feed and auction are planned April 9, 6-10 p.m., in the Roche Harbor Pavilion for Sophia Grace Krieg, a 6-month-old who needs a new heart. Sophia is the grand-niece of Debbie Sandwith.
Carl Johnson passed away March 5 in Parker, Ariz. He was 80. He was born and raised in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. He was the son of Julius and Edna Johnson, both early pioneers of San Juan. Carl attended Friday Harbor schools. His sister Marlene Crosby and his brother Edward Johnson still live on San Juan Island.
It was the kiss seen round the world. A Life magazine photographer captured a Navy sailor kissing a woman on Times Square, a spontaneous celebratory response to the announcement that World War II had ended. American Legion Post 163 will remember that moment and honor World War II veterans with a special dinner and a contest to see who can best replicate that kiss.
Joyce Christine Morrill Gaylard, beloved mother and wife, went home to be with her Lord. Joyce “Tiss” was born to Calvin Clare Morrill and Betty Mae Blanchard-Tate on Nov. 11, 1948 in her maternal great-grandparents’ home off of Sutton Road in Friday Harbor. She passed away March 6, 2010 after a long illness.
Gordy and Lori Petersen, owners of Friday Harbor Center at Spring and First streets, have opened The Bean coffee shop. The Bean is the successor of The Naked Bean, and features an entirely remodeled interior.

San Juan Dragons goalie Calen Mehrer and attackman Forest Dayton have been named to the Division II Pre-Season All-State Team, Washington State Boys Lacrosse Association. Mehrer was one of 12 players named to the All-State First Team. Dayton was one of 12 players named to the Second Team.
Islanders are invited to a reception at the Roy Franklin passenger terminal at Friday Harbor Airport on March 27, 4-5 p.m. The occasion is the annual update of the San Juan Aviation Museum, which is honoring Bob Nichols as its featured pilot this year.
A Friday Harbor woman who flew military planes in World War II was honored posthumously by the U.S. Congress March 10. Penelope Peirce Garrett, who graduated from the Women Airforce Service Pilots class on Nov. 8, 1944, received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor bestowed by Congress. U.S. Navy Midshipman Caitlin Ness of Friday Harbor received the medal on behalf of the family. Garrett is the mother of Gail Garrett of Friday Harbor.
