Carrie Brooks, dean of the Friday Harbor Town Council, has resigned for health reasons. Brooks submitted a letter of resignation this week. Her resignation is effective July 1. She was in the third year of her third four-year term; she was first elected to the council in November 1999.
Kendo Yasuda, a Roche Harbor native who helped record the history of Roche Harbor’s Japanese residents as well as community life in the village during the first quarter of the 20th century, has died.
Mr. Yasuda died June 6 in Payette, Idaho. He was 95.
On July 14, Laura Tretter will step down as director of San Juan Island Library after a four-year tenure at the top. Tretter on June 23 announced she has accepted a position with Bayfield Public Library, located near Durango, Colo.

Tom Pasma, Democratic candidate for the 40th District House of Representatives, position 1, makes his first campaign stop June 12 in Friday Harbor. He will visit with residents at the Farmers Market, attend the quarterly meeting of the San Juan Democrats and spend the afternoon doorbelling in town.
State Sen. Don Benton has dropped out of the race for U.S. Senate and endorsed former state senator Dino Rossi. Benton’s departure leaves 12 candidates in the Senate race — among them Democrat Patty Murray, the three-term incumbent; Rossi, the two-time candidate for governor; and Clint Didier, the NFL tight end-turned-farmer.
