Supporters of the American Camp prairie rabbits will gather Sunday at 3 p.m. at South Beach for a Bunny Tea (tea and carrot cake will be served) and to spend some time in what Bryn Barnard calls the “gentle Art of Watching Rabbits.”
I have had the pleasure of working with Brad Fincher for over 11 years and am pleased to vote for him for San Juan County sheriff. Brad has a high standard of integrity. He treats everyone that crosses his path with dignity regardless of their walk of life. He is respected by court staff, attorneys and defendants alike. He strongly holds offenders accountable, but does so in a manner that aims to inspire them to become better citizens. He embodies honorability and is a role model for others to do so.
The San Juan Historical Museum’s annual garage sale is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the museum resource center, 405 Price St., Friday Harbor. It’s a continuation of the sale from July 31. Bookcases, bedding, books, dishes, dolls, furniture and more. All proceeds will help support the museum’s programs and the restoration of its buildings. The annual Giant Parking Lot Sale at Mullis Community Senior Center begins at 9 a.m. More than 40 spaces have been booked and several candidates for San Juan County sheriff have also booked spaces.
Islanders can comment on a new plan for the parks, trails, and natural areas of San Juan County. A draft of the plan that will guide action and investment in San Juan County’s outdoor spaces for the next six years has been completed and is now available for public review.
Long-time Friday Harbor resident Betty J. Hood, 88, died July 28, 2010, in Orem, Utah, after suffering a stroke. Service is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7, at 3 p.m. at Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church.
The Friday Harbor Town Council gave the green light Thursday for the San Juan County Marine Resources Committee’s proposed rain gardens on Spring Street, designed to filter stormwater before it reaches the harbor.
Brad Fincher has my vote for sheriff. I think Brad has what it takes to become sheriff and to guide the Sheriff’s Department into the future. I have had the privilege of working closely with Brad during my time as San Juan County Fair manager. I met Brad when he moved to the San Juans and began his career with San Juan County. He served as Fair Board member and often as Fair Board chairman for more than nine years. His work and support contributed to the success of the fair.
My wife and I bought a home on the island in 2007. We grew up in Seattle and have been coming to the San Juan Islands since we were kids. We are now working hard to make this island home our permanent home. This task remains a work in progress.
We would like to express our support for Jeff Asher for sheriff of San Juan County. Several years ago, when our house was in the vacation rental pool, we were victims of credit card, debit card, and driver’s license theft. The perpetrator managed to rack up $10,000 in charges in less than a week. As we were out of the country, we were unaware of what was happening.
Ballots have arrived in the mail. Please, before you vote for U.S. representative, be aware that the incumbent, Rick Larsen, has voted “yea” for $1 trillion for wars. Taxpayers of San Juan County are responsible for $53.7 million for military occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. What do Larsen’s “yea” votes really mean for the people of Afghanistan and Iraq, for our own soldiers and their families?
He knows how to balance a budget and has experience being on the Town Council and running his own business. He shows initiative, and strives to make things better. He’s always worked hard in everything he does.
There are 30 employees in the department, and only a few are engaged in these attacks. For the most part, they represent the current leadership — the status quo. Should I not win, I will be unable to ensure that my supporters are treated fairly and professionally. Therefore, I will not ask my supporters within the department to publicly declare their support of my candidacy.
I find these qualities in Brad Fincher. When I was working in the courthouse, I never doubted that I could count on Brad to do his job, and do it well. I encouraged Brad to run for office, and ask you to vote Fincher for sheriff.
