The Journal endorses Nou for Sheriff, Morris for...
    October 20, 2010 12:27 pm

The San Juan Islands are fortunate to have two very qualified candidates for sheriff. Each is a good, solid, experienced cop. Deputy Rob Nou and Lead Detective Brent Johnson have had similar career experiences — Nou in an rural environment, Johnson in an urban environment — and both are involved in the community. Nou is 51 with 29 years of law enforcement experience; Johnson is 55 with 35 years of experience. Both have undergraduate degrees in law enforcement-related fields. Both have been administrative sergeants who led special assignments and details. But Nou has more advanced education and relevant management experience — as an FBI National Academy graduate, as a de-facto police chief in two communities that contracted for sheriff’s services, as a municipal chief of police, and as director of a 911 center serving one of the largest counties geographically in the U.S.

Nou would bring fresh leadership and a fresh perspective to a job that has been held by the same occupant for 24 years. We urge islanders to vote for him on Nov. 2.

Regarding Kira Sable’s letter endorsing her dad, Rich Peterson, to represent the Second District on the County Council, he is not my dad but I am going to vote for him anyway. Besides, I too find his “personal political agenda” in keeping with my own.

Friday Harbor finished fourth in the Cascadia Cup Sail Sand Point competition, Oct. 16 at Lake Washington. Thirteen high school and college teams hit Lake Washington under clear, sunny skies and temps in the upper 50s. The first race in A Division got started at 10:30 a.m. in a 3-knot northerly. The wind dropped to almost nothing during A Division’s second race, when a solid breeze filled the course as the fleet rounded the leeward mark.

I look for sincerity, community commitment and experience in both academic training and the real world workplace. Brent Johnson demonstrates that he has honed his training working with prosecuting attorneys to investigate cases and prepare them for Grand Juries, supervising in a large-city police department for 21 years, serving as lead detective for San Juan County for the past eight years, handling budget and supervisory responsibilities for a 17-member sector of deputies and amassing important experience in dealing with drug abuse, sexual abuse, and domestic violence issues.

As the sponsor of Referendum 2008-2, (non-) attorney of record of the lawsuit that overturned the 2009 election result, and head of the current RejectTheBan.com campaign, it is somewhat an understatement to say that I’ve had recent dealings with County Auditor Milene Henley and Prosecuting Attorney Randy Gaylord. Both are up for election this cycle, and both are running unopposed. Why might that be? I say it bespeaks the quality, professionalism, and commitment to service that these fine public servants bring to the table. Simply put, they are so good at their jobs that we can’t do any better. That’s why nobody’s running against them. They would have nothing more to offer, no alternatives better than what we already have.

Laura Jo Severson has all the qualities of a fine County Council representative. At a forum hosted by the San Juan County Builders Association on Oct. 13, Rich Peterson, her opponent, suggested that Severson would need (as he did) “1½ years” to orient herself to the job. However, Severson has attended council and advisory committee meetings regularly for several months and studied the issues, and has spent most of her campaign ringing doorbells to listen to the concerns and suggestions of her future constituents – and is prepared and bright enough to hit the ground running.

San Juan County is fortunate to have excellent representation in Washington, D.C. Sen. Murray and Rep. Larsen are both accessible and responsive to the needs to our community. Most recently, Rep. Larsen secured the funding for the acquisition of Mitchell Hill which will now become part of English Camp. Sen. Murray and Rep. Larsen have been instrumental in supporting and securing funding for many important community priorities including ferries, local schools and veterans.

‘Best Available Science’ is not a political decision
    October 19, 2010 5:22 pm

At the Oct. 13 Builders Association candidate forum, I was dismayed to hear both District 2 County Council candidates agree that Best Available Science (BAS) will be whatever four members of the County Council decide it is, suggesting it is merely a political choice. Contrary to that suggestion, BAS is not a popularity contest. It is a reasonably objective synthesis of the most applicable scientific research about the impacts of our actions on our natural surroundings and the methods for diminishing those impacts. State law establishes the criteria that scientific information must meet to be considered BAS.
