Rep. Jeff Morris, D-Mount Vernon, was leading Tuesday in his bid for reelection to the state House of Representatives, 40th District, Position 2. Districtwide as of 8:17 p.m., Morris — who is also House speaker pro tem — had 19,012 votes to 15,426 for Decatur Island businessman John Swapp, Republican.
“Safe and sane” fireworks have been extinguished. San Juan County voters approved a ban on “safe and sane” fireworks Tuesday, 3,580 to 3,051. It was an affirmation of the public’s vote last year; the measure ended up back on the ballot after Superior Court Judge Don Eaton ruled that wording of a 2009 ballot measure challenging the county’s ban had been changed without the review of the measure’s sponsor, and ordered another vote.
Rob Nou was elected the first new sheriff of San Juan County in 24 years Tuesday. Nou, a sheriff’s deputy and former Oregon police chief and administrative sergeant, received 4,113 votes to Lead Detective Brent Johnson’s 2,183. County Auditor F. Milene Henley said Nou had 64 percent of the vote and didn’t expect that to change.
The crash seemed to happen in slow motion. “Nobody saw it coming,” a Lopez Village Market employee working at the deli counter said. “We heard this crazy, crashing sound and saw the car coming through the window. The glass was breaking as the car was coming through. It seemed to take a long time. It was very surreal.”

Commissioners of San Juan County Fire District 3 will have a special meeting Wednesday, 3 p.m., in the Mullis Street Fire Station to discuss a proposed agreement to provide fire protection services in the Town of Friday Harbor. The meeting is open to the public.

The S-Club of Friday Harbor High School raised $245 for the Friday Harbor Animal Shelter at an Oct. 28 bake sale at Friday Harbor MarketPlace. The money will be used for food for the animals and any other needs.
Chief Warrant Officer 3 Carrie A. McLeish (Friday Harbor High School Class of 1989) graduated from the U.S. Army’s School of Information Technology at Fort Gordon, Ga. on Oct. 29. Completion of the 950-hour Warrant Officer Advanced Course earned McLeish several certifications, including GIAC Certified Windows Security Administrator, Intrusion Analyst, Incident Handler, Systems and Network Auditor, Forensic Analyst, Penetration Testor and Firewall and Ethical Hacker. GIAC stands for Global Information Assurance Certification. Fewer than 100 individuals worldwide hold all these certifications.
Phil Robertson, a longtime resident of Shaw Island, passed away peacefully at home. He was 90. He was a native of San Francisco and lived there until moving to Shaw Island. A World War II veteran, he served in Europe and the Pacific.
A heartfelt thanks to the people of Friday Harbor: As many of you are aware, we lost our Nikki on the 17th of October. As painful a loss as it is to lose any family member, I have to admit how much it touched my heart to see just how dear she has been to so many people.
For the past 10 years, someone has stole upon my property and removed all the apples, ripe for harvest, from my trees. They have done so in the darkness of night or at the light of first dawn. They are obviously islanders, as this has occurred yearly. I do not have a problem with sharing my harvest. I do have a problem with someone stealing from me.
