There were many wet eyes during the curtain call in the American Legion Hall, downstairs, Saturday night. Miguel Andreas Herbert’s comedy-drama “Only a Ridgeline Away,” about two Vietnam War veteran buddies who live together at the California State Veterans Home in Napa Valley, was staged at the Legion, its first test as an off-theater, on-the-road production.
Late returns Thursday show Rep. Rick Larsen with a growing lead over Snohomish County Councilman John Koster, R-Arlington, in his bid for a sixth term representing the 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Koster held a 1,500-vote lead election night. By Wednesday night, with two-thirds of ballots counted, updated returns showed Larsen with a 500-vote lead. Thursday night, Larsen’s lead had increased to 1,451.
After the eighth frame, Scott Olinger knew his game was on. Four balls later, he proved himself right and finished with the ultimate accomplishment. Olinger, 49, kept his focus to bowl a perfect game at Paradise Lanes during Wednesday night league competition, Nov. 3. It’s his sixth 300 game in league play and his first since 1994. He also has four non-league 300 games to his credit. (The game’s governing body, the United States Bowling Congress, records and awards a ring for 300 games bowled in sanctioned league play.)
San Juan County Fire District 3 officials say the Friday Harbor Fire Department doesn’t have enough firefighters to provide fire protection services within the town limits. On Friday, they will send a letter to Mayor Carrie Lacher offering that assessment and urging the Town Council to contract with the district for fire protection services.

On the Town Council agenda at 12:30 p.m. Thursday — today — is “Council discussion of franchise take-out food restaurants.” Citizen response follows on the agenda after approval of minutes and discussion of future agenda items, although the mayor has the authority to allow citizen comment at any time. And as of Wednesday, 140 people had signed a petition expressing their opposition to a Subway restaurant locating in town.

Four people were injured — but not serious enough to require hospitalization — in the crash at Lopez Village Market, Nov. 2. Sheriff Bill Cumming said injuries included cuts caused by glass, and muscle strain. One person needed stitches on a knee. The driver of the vehicle was taken to Lopez Island Medical Clinic to be checked out and was released.
Nov. 3, the day after the election, was Sheriff-elect Rob Nou’s day off, and he was looking forward to heaving “a really big sigh of relief the whole campaign is over with and done, then gearing up to start working toward a smooth transition.” His work will begin soon. Nou, a Lopez Island sheriff’s deputy and former Oregon police chief and administrative sheriff’s sergeant, received 4,113 votes to Lead Detective Brent Johnson’s 2,183. County Auditor F. Milene Henley said Tuesday that Nou had 64 percent of the vote and didn’t expect that to change.
The San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild announced Wednesday it has purchased the historic building and property at 150 Nichols St., the future home of Friday Harbor Brickworks, a farmers’ market facility and community events center.
Lead Detective Brent Johnson, who received 2,183 votes in the election for San Juan County sheriff Nov. 2, submitted this letter today congratulating Rob Nou, sheriff-elect, and thanking voters for their support.
Snohomish County Councilman John Koster, R-Arlington, held a slight lead early Tuesday in his bid to replace Rick Larsen as the representative of the 2nd District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Koster was ahead of the five-term congressman in Island, Skagit and Snohomish counties.
