Veterans Day is a time to honor and celebrate the courage and commitment of our nation’s heroes. As the daughter of a disabled veteran, I have personally witnessed the deep sacrifices our men and women in uniform and their families have made for our country. And I believe that we owe them nothing less than the full support of a grateful nation when they come home.
In 1933, 77 years ago, there were no middle schools in Nebraska. It was the first of four terms for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who had been elected president of the United States. We were in a Great Depression, plagued by a drought. Seven of Omaha’s banks were closed and except for two who survived, depositors lost all of their savings. Unemployment was about 30 percent. A war was surely coming and the first-ever peacetime draft was the next stop after high school graduation for boys.
What are those white things in Beaverton Valley Marsh? Mysterious groves of white tubes sprouted seemingly overnight at the San Juan County Land Bank’s Beaverton Marsh Preserve along Roche Harbor Road, causing neighbors and others to scratch their heads as they drove past. Was this some kind of modern art installation? Were alien beings responsible? No – this was just one step in a major wetland protection and restoration effort that the Land Bank is leading.

Dad’s gone, so it’s not about him. It’s about us and how he made us feel, how he left a wake of smiles with his humor, his positive energy and appreciation. He was down from Juneau with us only three years and wasn’t exactly a social butterfly, but everyone who came in contact with him felt his workingman Buddha essence and glowed with it. I know I did, and feel blessed.
June 9, 1970 was the centenary of the writer Charles Dickens’ death. For most, the date would mean no more than a celebration of the famous author. For six-year-old Gerald Dickens, however, it meant something more personal. Dickens is the great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens, and the centenary marked a realization of this important relationship.
Chamber Music San Juans host some special guests Nov. 7 (today): the accomplished string quartet Odeonquartet. They will play a selection of Russian pieces at the San Juan Community Theatre, beginning at 2 p.m. Fresh from a Moscow tour earlier this year, the musicians will play an array of Russian chamber music — from Pavel Karmanov’s 1997 minimalist, baroque-informed string quartet; to Glazunov’s 1892 richly-orchestrated cello quintet.
