2011 will see the beginning of a new chapter for the middle and high school plays. Not only will Bristol Whalen be the new director for the middle school performance, additionally co-directing the high school play, but both schools will perform the same piece. Or rather, variations on the same piece.
Gigi Zakula has another hat to wear at Islanders Insurance. As of Jan. 1, Zakula has joined Kerwin and Margaret Johnson as co-owner of the Friday Harbor-based insurance company. Zakula, who first joined the company in 1991, has worked as an agent, underwriter and claims handler, and in 2007 took on the position as the agency’s manager.
The Town of Friday Harbor is beginning its Shoreline Master Program Update process. This program update will take about three years to complete, and information can be obtained at www.fridayharbor.org/smp or by e-mailing information requests to smp@fridayharbor.org. The initial meeting will be held during the regular Planning Commission meeting of Jan. 13, 5:35 p.m. in the Town Council Chambers, 60 Second St., Friday Harbor.

Their prize-winning English-style cider is crisp, clean, refreshing and low in alcohol, and is available at all island grocery stores and in Seattle.

The San Juan Island Community Foundation announced Jan. 5 its award of $2 million to PeaceHealth toward the construction of the new Peace Island Medical Center in Friday Harbor. The project will provide comprehensive medical care to residents of San Juan, including a significantly expanded family practice clinic, 24/7 emergency and urgent care, a full suite of digital imaging and laboratory services, outpatient surgery center, inpatient hospital and a cancer care center.
The well ran dry down the rest of the way, as Darrington (9-1) scored nine the next 11 points to hand the Wolverines their second-straight defeat, a 42-39 loss, in a pivotal clash between Northwest 1A/2B League title contenders Tuesday in Turnbull Gym.
Tanner Buck tossed in 16 points and Preston Ukra added 14 to pace Friday Harbor on the offensive end.
