The Wolverines tallied six points on the final snap of the game as quarterback Tanner Buck and wide receiver Forrest Dayton hooked up on a 60-plus-yard touchdown pass at the end of regulation.

But it was too little, and much too late. The Knights of King’s High School took control early on, tallied six touchdowns and bounced Friday Harbor out of post-season play with a 42-15 victory at home Thursday in the opening round of the District 1 playoffs. The Knights, at 7-3, advanced into the second round of the District 1 playoffs with the win.

The Wolverines, down by double digits at the half, managed to stay with striking distance before the break thanks to a 25-yard field goal by freshman Brett Paul and a 6-yard TD pass from Buck to wide receiver Niko Roiko. But after intermission, fatigue took a toll on a team hard-hit by the flu the past two weeks and Friday Harbor faltered down the stretch in what proved to be an exceedingly fast-paced game on the artificial turf of Shoreline’s Woolsey Stadium.

“We were moving the ball and slowing their quarterback down in the first half, which was a big part of our game plan,” Head Coach Darrin Scheffer said. “The guys played a great first half, minus two plays (a missed tackle and a defensive strip led to a pair of King’s touchdowns). I’m proud of our effort, we just didn’t get it done.”

For the Wolverines, the loss brought an end to a roller-coaster season. Friday Harbor ended the season at 3-7 overall, perfect in three tries against Division 2B foes and winless against seven 1A teams. Two of those losses, both to Lynden Christian, were by a combined six points, including a 23-20 loss on the road in overtime and a 3-0 defeat on a rain-swollen and mud-laden field in the final game of the regular season in Friday Harbor.
