SJI PREPARE mobilizes support for flooding response

Submitted by San Juan Islands PREPARE

San Juan Islands PREPARE, a locally based disaster-preparedness nonprofit, has been voted into Washington VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster), joining a statewide coordination non-profit network that includes the American Red Cross, Americares, United Way and Catholic Charities.

Following a recent VOAD situational awareness briefing related to flooding in Skagit and Whatcom Counties, SJIP mobilized to support response efforts. Within 36 hours, the organization raised funds and delivered 75 meals to affected communities, with delivery locations coordinated through the American Red Cross. An accredited volunteer flight crew was also placed on standby after landslides impacted the Concrete, Washington area, though aviation resources were ultimately not deployed due to weather and scale considerations.

“The generosity of our island community made it possible to respond quickly and responsibly,” said Elizabeth Gadbois, President of San Juan Islands PREPARE.

SJIP’s participation in Washington VOAD strengthens disaster readiness in the San Juan Islands while supporting coordinated response efforts statewide.
