Carts lined up in the King’s Market aisles and the timer was set to four minutes, Nov. 24. Grand prize winner of the annual San Juan Island Lions’ Shopping Spree was Conrad Berthold, who was ready, as was his wife, Margaret. Margaret did the racing for him.

“The Spree is about to begin, shoppers please stay out of the racers’ way,” they announced over the King’s loudspeaker.

The club has held the spree since 1990, with the cooperation of Kings Market, Market Place and Valmark as a creative way to raise funds for their scholarships. Raffle tickets have been on sale for the month of November. 100% of those sales, plus any donations toward the event, minus the cost of the Shopping Spree Run, goes directly to graduating high school seniors attending college or a trade school.

Lions were on standby to assist, while Margaret grabbed almost everything except meat and dairy. Winners are given a separate $50 card for those items. The total was $458.11.

Turkeys were also given as second, third and fourth prizes. The second prize winner was Marion Langatree, who is donating the bird to the Friday Harbor Food Bank. Third and fourth prizes went to Daniel Porter and Cathy Fox.
