Legion teams up with local artist to create a fresh, healing mural on their waterfront wall

Submitted by Pam Hoke.

American Legion’s Shannon Plummer and local artist Pam Hoke have been working on this project idea for years. The idea was to create a more unifying image that aligns with the Town of Friday Harbor’s historic character and natural elements, and expresses unity as Americans.

The former image on the wall expressed a time of fracture, yet the Legion sensed now was the time to create a unifying, healing message. The current mural in progress will gradually emerge through late August and September. Hoke will be working with local mural artist Memes Bouwman and other young artists, as available, to ensure the image comes to life.

“The bald eagle amidst a calm blue sky and soothing clouds will be the primary focus of this mural,” states Hoke. “The island has a beautiful population of bald eagles, and with this majestic being representing our country, this expresses hope of healing and unity that many of us desire for America. As a veteran widow and mom, my heart has always held deep space for those who made an oath to our country and those who made large sacrifices for us all. It is an honor to have this opportunity to apply my career of expressing nature as our connecting force within my art through this project. The design was grounded in creating an image that unified the community.”
