Artists can learn to photograph work at Friday Harbor workshop

Submitted by the San Juan Islands Museum of Art

The San Juan Islands Museum of Art staff and volunteers are sponsoring a unique workshop for artists who want the best photos of their art. Artists often need high-quality photographs for references, submissions for exhibitions, copyright protections, documentation, use in mixed-media creations, or to sell or license their work.

The class will be from 1-5 p.m., Sunday, July 29, at the San Juan Islands Museum of Art located at 540 Spring St. in Friday Harbor. The class will help artists working in any two-dimensional or three-dimensional media learn more about camera handling, settings, lighting and lenses. All skill levels working with any digital camera are welcome.

Students are asked to bring their cameras, samples of their art and the merchandise they have made from their art.

Register for the class at www.sjima.org under “Learn.” Class size is limited, and registration is on a first come, first served basis.

Celebrated instructor Ray Pfortner of Vashon Island has extensive experience in photography and the business of art in the Photography Certificate Program at the University of Washington. This workshop is offered in conjunction with the photography exhibit “Viva Cuba!” at the San Juan Community Theatre gallery, opening July 10 and on display until Aug. 31. The exhibit includes photographs taken by 24 artists on trips that Pfortner led to Cuba in 2016 and 2017. Turn to page 8 to read about this photography show.
