Friday Harbor cruises past Concrete for first win of the season | Volleyball

No one expected Concrete to put up much of a fight. And the Wolverines made sure expectations weren't exceeded with a crushing victory in three-straight over the Lions in their home-opener Tuesday in Turnbull Gym. The Wolverines posted winning scores of 25-10, 25-16, 25-6, in a match up of league opponents that wasn't as close as game scores might reflect. They led from start to finish and were never tested against an inexperienced Concrete squad that's been a fixture at the bottom of the league in recent years.

And the Wolverines made sure those expectations weren’t exceeded by crushing the LIons in three consecutive games and cruising to victory in their home-opener Tuesday in Turnbull Gym.

The Wolverines posted winning scores of 25-10, 25-16, 25-6, in a match up of league opponents that wasn’t as close as game scores might reflect. They led from start to finish and were never tested against an inexperienced Concrete squad that’s been a fixture at the bottom of the league in recent years.

“After losing our first game, we really wanted to redeem ourselves,” senior Jenny Gustafson said. “Concrete hasn’t won a game off us during my time on the team.”

With the win, the Friday Harbor volleyball team tallied win No. 1 of the year, evened its record at 1-1, and picked up its first victory in Northwest 1A/2B League play.

The level of competition should increase dramatically on Thursday, however, as the Wolverines square off on the road against perennial league powerhouse Shoreline Christian. The Crusaders have repeatedly been in the chase for the league title, along with Darrington and La Conner, as of late.

Nevertheless, Friday Harbor nearly split its season series with Shoreline Christian a year ago. The Wolverines took the Crusaders to the wire before dropping a five-game thriller on the road, and also snagged one game before losing in four at home. Gustafson expects the Crusaders, as well as the rest of the league top teams, will have all they can handle — possibly more — against the Wolverines this season.

“I think we’ll be up there with the better teams in the leauge,” she said.

Next: The Wolverines (1-1) are on the road at Shoreline Christian Thursday. They are back home Saturday to host Evergreen Lutheran in a non-league contest; match time is 3 p.m. in Turnbull Gym.
