On Friday, Nov. 4, the first grade students of Friday Harbor Elementary School had the opportunity to explore the San Juan Island Public Library on a field trip. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated library staff, led by Melina Lagios, library youth services manager, students spent an exciting hour learning how the library works. First graders received barcode stickers and were “scanned” to see how books are checked in and out by Jen Fleming. They were also read aloud a humorous story by Kathy Babbitt and given a tour of the children’s section. As a finale, students received their very first public library card on lanyards.
Students and parents welcomed the opportunity for children to take advantage of this valuable community resource. First grade teachers Shannon Danskine, Diane Heller and Kayla Short feel confident that their students will become stronger readers. They report that many students have already checked out books and plan to make regular use of the public library.
