LWV Observer Corp notes on School Board meeting

SJI School District regular meeting of Dec. 13

The Friday Harbor Elementary School choir lead by Shannon Danskine opened the board meeting with three songs to welcome the holiday season.

Fred Woods swore in two returning board members, T.J. Heller and Brian Moore. John Kurtz was not present but will be sworn in later.

Board officers were elected with Sarah Werling-Sandwith returning as Vice Chair and WIAA Rep, Barbara Bevin as Board Chair and T.J. Heller as Legislative Rep.

Superintendent Fred Woods reported that the Pre-K Development Program is scheduled to begin Jan. 15. State grants will fund the program for this year and potential new state grants may fund the program for the next school year. Jose Domenech reported that enrollment was steady and budget numbers were on track for the month.

The Capital and Technology levy will be on the February 2024 ballot. As required, they are seeking committees to present the pro and con positions. The proposition has three people selected and approved. They are seeking candidates to represent the con position.

A “Day on the Hill” in Olympia has been scheduled for Jan. 28-29. The next meeting will be Jan. 31.
