Contract awarded to convert largest vessels to hybrid-electric power

Submitted by the Washington State Ferry Service.

WSF took a big step forward this week in our electrification efforts. Vigor was awarded a contract to convert up to three Jumbo Mark II-class ferries to hybrid-electric power. The contract also includes the replacement of each vessel’s propulsion control systems, which will increase their reliability and extend the life expectancy of these vessels. Vigor’s winning bid was just over $150 million. The state’s estimate was approximately $120 million. Work on Wenatchee begins next month and should be done in a year. Vigor will then begin converting Tacoma in 2024. We have the option to extend the contract to convert Puyallup in 2025. Once complete, and shoreside charging is in place, a 95% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is anticipated on Jumbo Mark II vessels.

The three largest Jumbo Mark II ferries currently contribute 26% of the 21-boat fleet’s greenhouse gas emissions.
