San Juan Community Theatre debuts playwriting workshop

Theater artists of all experience levels are invited to join San Juan Community Theatre’s first annual Original Works Project, a summer of writing and workshops.

Taking place between May and September, the project supports island writers in creating short pieces for the stage that will be presented in the Gubelman Theatre in September. The project’s 2017 theme, “It Happened in the Park,” is in partnership with the National Park Service.

Original Works aims to expand the playwright’s resources beyond simply sitting alone in front of a computer. With this goal in place, writing for the stage becomes a dynamic conversation between performers, playwrights and outside eyes.

“If there is a strong collaborative element in the development process,” said SJCT Executive/Artistic Director Bobby Ryan, “the end product becomes deeply enriched.”

The deadline to register for the project is Friday, May 10. A registration form and program schedule are available at www.sjctheatre.org. To register at $65 per person, visit the SJCT Box Office, which is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays.
