Submitted by San Juan Island Friends of the Library

The San Juan Island Friends of the Library will celebrate the National Friends of Libraries Week, Oct. 15-21 with activities and special events.

That week starts the FOL annual membership drive for 2018. Membership forms will be available at the FOL table in the library salon. All members joining FOL between Oct. 15 – Dec. 9 will be eligible for a $100 gift certificate to Griffin Bay Bookstore plus one new library T-shirt. Drawings will be held on Dec. 9 at the holiday book sale.

Kicking off the week will be a free book swap on Sunday, Oct. 15, for all ages. It will include three categories: mysteries, comics (for all ages) and graphic books (for children under 12). Bring books by 2 p.m. and swap them by 2:30 pm. Refreshments will be provided.

The main event is a presentation by librarian Leslie Baker titled “A Gentle Madness: collecting rare and old books” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18. Baker will explain how to start collecting, the resources available, and highlights from her collection. Refreshments will be provided.

Other events include honoring trustees, acknowledging youth with special tattoos and offering a special Saturday sale at Treasure Cove. Treasure Cove is the FOL fundraising store, located just inside the library entrance.
