The Wolverines pulled out the bats and pulled off a shocker with back-to-back victories at home over league-leading La Conner Saturday in their regular season finale.
Trailing 1-0 in the opener, Friday Harbor blew the game wide open by batting around the order and tallying eight runs in the fourth inning on five timely base hits, including a pair of triples by sophomore Elle Guard.
Guard led off the inning with a triple, scored on a double by Brooke Jangard and drove in a run by stroking another triple in her second at-bat of the inning. Fellow sophomores Maggie Anderson and Hannah Starr each knocked in runs as well in the fourth.
“We needed that,” said Jangard, who celebrated birthday No. 18 by uncorking four base hits, scoring three runs and tallying a pair of RBIs. “We definitely scrapped for every run.”
When the dusted settled, the Wolverines had a commanding 8-1 lead. They withstood a late-game rally by the Braves and bagged the opening game 10-8. They lit up the Braves and pitching ace Sami Miller for 10 runs in the closing game to close out Northwest 1A/2B League play at 9-3. They improved to 11-7 overall and notched win No. 6 in a row.
Junior Kerri Goff tossed both games of the doubleheader, earning wins in each. Though she struggled with her control, Goff, like the rest of the Wolverines, was dynamite at the plate. She swatted a three-run homer over the left-center fence, her first of the season, that highlighted the eight-run rally in the fourth.
In 14 innings on the mound, Goff struck out 13, but gave up 21 walks.
“I didn’t have my best out there today, but we made up for it with our hitting,” Goff said. “We’ve been hitting a lot better than we did at the start of the year.”
Next: A berth in the District 1 Tournament will be on the line Friday when the Wolverines and Coupeville square-off in a “play-in game” in Friday Harbor. Game time is 4:45 p.m.
The winner will clinch a berth at the District 1 Tournament on Saturday at Janicki Fields, in Sedro-Woolley, while the season ends for the loser. Friday Harbor beat the Wolves 13-3 two months ago in the season opener.
