A week ago, the Wolverines (5-0 league, 7-5 overall) shattered a scoreless tie at the half to upset the La Conner, the defending league champ, in a 3-1 victory on the Braves home field. Expect La Conner to be looking to even the score.

The Friday Harbor High School girls soccer team will host the La Conner Braves, Tuesday, in a showdown for the Northwest 1A/2B League title.

The game begins at 4:30 p.m.

A week ago, the Wolverines (5-0 league, 7-5 overall) shattered a scoreless tie at the half to upset La Conner, the defending league champ, in a 3-1 victory on the Braves home field.

The clash for the league title promises to be intense because of the long-standing rivalry between the two teams, Friday Harbor co-captain Emily Guard said.

“Over my high school soccer career, the La Conner Braves have been our number one opponent,” Guard said. “We’ve played games that have gone into over-time, into shoot-outs, where yellow cards have been pulled, players fallen and coaches upset.”

More than bragging rights are at stake, she added.

“Tuesday is a game for us to prove that we are dominant, setting us up to be league champs and even more importantly, undefeated league champs.”

The rivalry dates back years co-captain, Emma Brand said.

“I’ve played four years of high-intensity games against LaConner and you can just feel the energy and the rivalry that passes between our team and theirs,” she said. “What sets us apart this year is our drive to get back what’s ours. After last years loss, we just want it more than they do.”

Following Tuesday’s title bout, the Wolverines close out the regular season Saturday, at Lynden Christian, followed by Mount Vernon Christian at home, Monday, Oct. 28, in the season finale.
