Four points in the final period weren’t enough to keep the Lions at bay.

With a frenetic comeback in the waning moments of regulation, Concrete shed a five-point deficit at the half and knocked down just enough free-throws at crunch time to deal the Wolverines a stinging 32-30 defeat Friday in Turnbull Gym.

It’s one that the Wolverines (1-3 league, 2-8 overall) believe they let slip away.

“We played poor on defense and were weak on offense,” junior Kayla Short said. “We just kind of lost it.”

Up 18-13 at the half, Friday Harbor lost much of its firepower in the second half as the Lions rolled out a box-and-one defense to keep the ball out of the hands of point-guard Brooke Jangard. The senior sharp-shooter carried the offensive load early on and tossed in 10 points in the first half to help the Wolverines stake a five-point lead at the break.

But with Jangard under wraps, and without starting low post players Kelsey Barnes and Meaghan McCormick in the lineup, Friday Harbor found few options open on the offensive end, and struggled to score down the stretch.

Jangard paced the Wolverines’ offensive with 11 points, but managed only a single point, from the free-throw line, after the break. Sophomore Maggie Anderson tossed in six and Kelsey O’Day and Larrisa Nash each had five.

Concrete (1-2 league) grabbed its first lead, 29-28, with about two minutes left in regulation as senior Natasha Smith corralled a rebound and put it back up and in. Friday Harbor’s Anderson sank a pair of free throws to put Friday Harbor back up 30-29 with less than a minute to play, but Smith and senior guard Gabby Bauer added three more points from the free-throw line as the Lions reclaimed the lead and held the Wolverines scoreless over the final seconds.
